X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) is regarded as the most precise technique available for determining retained austenite levels down to 0.5%.

The integrated intensities of the austenite (220) and (311), as well as the ferrite (200) and (211) diffraction peaks, are measured using the AreX diffractometer. Employing multiple diffraction peaks reduces the impact of preferred orientation and enables the detection of interference from carbides.
